How To Choose The Right Chicken Cage Size

how to choose the right chicken cage size banner

When purchasing new chicken cages, choosing a suitable cage size is one of the most crucial issues. Whether you are an experienced chicken farmer or a novice one, the relationship between the size of the chicken cage and the number of chickens you are breeding will have a significant impact on the health of the flock. We should choose the right chicken cage size according to the number and size of the chicken to meet chicken needs. Today, we will provide some parameters of chicken size to help all farmers choose the right chicken cage size.

Point 1 classification by purpose

The chicken cage is divided into three types according to purpose: pullet cage, broiler cage and layer cage.

Pullet cage

Pullet cage is usually used to breeding chicken before 140 days, its size is usually designed to 3-4 layers overlapping each other. Specific size is as follows:

  • Total height of the cage: Approximately 1.7 meters.
  • Cage length: 700 – 1000 millimeters.
  • Cage height: 300 – 400 millimeters.
  • Cage depth: 400 – 500 millimeters.
  • Cage mesh size: The bottom mesh size is generally 12.5 × 12.5 millimeters, while the mesh sizes of the side and top nets are 25 × 25 millimeters.

Layer cage

The size design of the layer cage needs to consider the comfort of the layer chicken during egg production and the convenience of egg collection. The specific size  is as follows:

  • Cage length: 400 millimeters.
  • Cage depth: 450 millimeters.
  • Front height: 450 millimeters.
  • Rear height: 380 millimeters.
  • Cage bottom inclination: 7.5 degrees.
  • Cage bottom mesh: Weave spacing 22 millimeters, weft spacing 60 millimeters.
  • Cage door width: 210 – 240 millimeters.

Broiler cage

Broiler cage is suitable for the chicken in the 41-140 days, its design take into consideration the density of breeding and activity space of chicken. Speafic size is as follows:

  • Overall width: 1.6 – 1.7 meters.
  • Height: 1.7 – 1.8 meters.
  • Cage length: 800 millimeters.
  • Cage height: 400 millimeters.
  • Cage depth: 420 millimeters.
  • Bottom mesh of the cage: 20 – 40 millimeters.
  • Cage door width: 140 – 150 millimeters.

Point 2 classification by combining form

The chicken cage is divided into two types according to combining form: A type chicken cage and H type chicken cage.

A type chicken cage

A type chicken cage is usually designed for 2-3 layers, its advantage is the open areas of each layer of cages are extensive, ventilation is wide, and could provide even illumination. In addition, its structure of cleaning manure is simple and easy to maintain everyday. If the machine breaks down or experiences a power outage, this cage is easy to manual operation. Whereas, the breeding density of A type chicken cages is relatively low, approximately 10 to 12 chickens per square meter. This characteristic limits use to a certain extent.

H type chicken cage

With technology development and land resources decreasing, further evolved into an H type chicken cage. This This chicken cage has the upper and lower layers completely overlapping, the chicken manure is cleaned from one layer to another by a conveyor belt. Thus it greatly improves breeding density and reduces the area of the chicken cage. This design has relatively high requirements for chicken cage construction, ventilation equipment, and manure removal facilities, and its high breeding density appeals to more and more chicken farms.

Point 3 choose the right chicken cage size

Clarify your poultry farming goals

Before choosing a chicken cage, please clarify your poultry farming goals. Do you raise layer chickens, broiler chickens, or chick chickens? Are you pursuing small-scale production or large-scale commercial farming? Different chicken cage system is designed for specific goals.

Budget and cost-effectiveness

Though choosing the cheapest cage might be quite tempting, investing a high-quality cage could bring outstanding performance and lower long-term costs. Please consider the total cost of ownership of the cage, including installation, operation, and maintenance costs.

Choose a suitable cage

First, we should specify the standard specifications of the chicken cages, the length is usually between 1.5 and 2.5 meters, the width is from 0.8 to 1.5 meters, and the height is within the range of 1 to 1.5 meters. This size not only meets the daily activities of chickens but also ensures their comfort. When choosing a cage, we should adjust the size of the chicken according to the size of the chickens, big chickens need bigger activity space. At the same time, breeding chicken quantity is a key consideration in determining the size of the cages. We should ensure each chicken has enough activity space. In addition, the activity level and comfort of chickens cannot be ignored either. The cage design should be convenient for chicken-free activity, eating, and taking a rest.
