Setting up an oil mill is indeed a good investment. Because it could bring much profit. Oil mill machinery will determine your oil mill’s future. Whether you are a manufacturer with rich experience or a beginner who is just starting, choosing oil mill machinery directly has an impact on your production efficiency and profit. If you don’t know how to select oil mill machinery, this post will provide a guide.

Step 1. Confirm the raw materials

First, you should confirm what kind of oil mill you want to set up. The oil mills are different, and the machinery used for extracting oil is also different. An oil mill is a combination of equipment used to press seeds and nuts to extract edible oil. Many different types of seeds and nuts can be processed to extract oil, such as peanut, sunflower, palm, cottonseed, sesame, soybean, etc. Every material also has a special process step.

Step 2. Confirm capacity

Before choosing oil mill machinery, you should confirm the capacity. For a small-scale oil mill, A cost-effective manual or semi-automatic oil press will do. For medium or large-scale oil mills, you need to be equipped with an automatic press machine to ensure the extraction of oil. AGICO could provide a reliable press machine according to your needs.

Small scale oil mill1-5tpd$6000-$25000
Meduim scale oil mill10-50 tpd$50000-$27000
Large scale oil millOver 100 tpd$400000-$1300000

Step 3. Confirm the method of oil extraction

Cold press and hot press

Cold press: Before cold pressing, it requires processing under 60 ℃, and the nutritional components are retained the most intact. Because cold-pressed presses just have half of a hot press, the price of most cold-pressed oils is about 50% higher than that of heat-pressed oils. It is suitable for olive oil, flaxseed oil, and walnut oil.

Hot press: roasts the seed and then extracts oil. The aroma is particularly fragrant, the color is darker, and the yield is higher. The product contains very little residue and is easy to preserve. It is suitable for use with soybean oil, sunflower oil, etc.

Mechanical extraction and solvent extraction

Mechanical extraction: oil is extracted by pressing. This method is simple and safe, but the yield of oil is lower.

Solvent extraction: using chemical solvents to dissolve the extracted oil from the seeds, this method is more efficient for large-scale production.

Step 4. Confirm equipment

process of oil mill machinery

Cleaning: a clean sieve is used to remove impurities in raw material, which is usually composed of different-sized screens and a suction system capable of removing tiny particles. In addition, we could carry out a customized design based on the specific impurity situation. If your material cleanliness meets standards, do not use this equipment.

Flaking: flakers are used to further crush the seed. It breaks the cell wall by applying pressure. This makes the oil drainage process much easier.

Cooking: the seeds are heated before being pressed. To increase the oil yield, the temperature and moisture content are usually adjusted. During the hot pressing process, the oil seeds will be heated before being pressed. If the cold pressing is chosen, this equipment does not need to be installed.

Pressing: the press machine extracts oil by mechanical method, or pre-compression treatment of the oil seeds is carried out before solvent extraction. Press machine has two types, hydraulic presses or screw presses. A hydraulic press is a pure physical oil extraction method. During the oil extraction process, no temperature is generated, and the organic components of the oil are not damaged. It is suitable for some oil-rich oils (such as sesame, almonds,  and peanuts). During the oil extraction process, using a spiral oil extractor, there is friction between the machine rings, which can damage the organic components of the oil. During the rotational friction process, some oils with high oil content will form oil sludge and be squeezed out from the pressure ring, resulting in a higher content of impurities in the oil.

Refining: it is to remove harmful chemical substances. The refining process includes degumming and desalination steps, which make people get healthier edible oil.

It is not a complete list of all the oil extraction machine equipment that you must purchase. You may need additional equipment in the subsequent process. This entirely depends on the raw materials you use and your production scale.

Step 5. Evaluate equipment characteristic

Capacity: evaluate the processing capacity of the machine on a daily basis to ensure your production goals.

Efficiency: using high yield rate of machine. Higher efficiency means being able to produce more oil. It could increase profit lever.

Energy consumption: your profit is decided based on the daily operation cost. Compare the energy consumption of different types of machines. Choosing machines that can achieve the best balance between performance and energy consumption, making the long-term operation more sustainable.

Daily maintenance: choosing machines that are easy to clean and maintain. Daily maintenance is indispensable for stable performance and avoiding downtime.

Step 6. Additional service and support

The oil mill machinery also check whether there are quality certifications such as ISO or BIS. And it ensure manufacturers whether provide reliable technology support and comprehensive warranty service. Choosing oil mill machinery is a long term service, so choosing oil mill machinery should evaluate own requirement.
